ITRI ICT TechDay provides a valuable opportunity for attendees to gain insights on the latest ICT technologies. ITRI’s Open AI Training System is an optimized open source software technology for deep learning training. ITRI Take is a Computer Vision Based Self-Checkout System that allows easy shopping. C-V2X technology can be applied to vehicles and roads to ensure safety for all road users.

The third annual ITRI ICT TechDay was held in Taipei on August 2, 2018. This year’s forum covered a variety of topics, centering on technologies including information security of IoT, 5G, AI, smart finance, and unmanned vehicles. In this event, ITRI also showcased its latest ICT R&D achievements, including the Open AI Training System and ITRI Take, a Computer Vision Based Self-Checkout System that allows easy shopping. It is hoped that these innovative technologies will stimulate more business opportunities to drive greater growth for Taiwan’s ICT industry.

Dr. Tzi-Cker Chiueh, ITRI’s Vice President and General Director of Information and Communications Research Laboratories, stated that this forum provides a valuable platform for the forum attendees to gain new insights from the world’s top industry players and exchange valuable experiences with industry experts. He also shared four innovative technologies developed by ITRI at the forum: Smartphone App Streaming, Program Whitelisting, Open AI Training System, and Reconfigurable Array of Inexpensive Batteries Architecture (RAIBA).

Dr. Chiueh further pointed out that the R&D of an open AI training system is crucial for the industrialization of AI in Taiwan. According to estimations by Merrill Lynch, the global market of DNN training systems will expand from $650 million NTD in 2017 to $7 billion NTD by 2020. Dr. Chiueh believes that the server of the AI training system developed in Taiwan has strong potential in the global market. If Taiwan is able to perform well in both software and hardware technologies, Taiwan’s AI training system can increase six times in production value, reaching hundreds of billion dollars.

The forum also invited Minister Fujii Akihito of KDDI, Japan’s second largest telecom company, Director and Co-founder Ken Tamagawa of the IoT platform provider Soracom, and Executive VP Marc Hamilton of the major GPU manufacturer NVIDIA to share their views on the rising global trend of AIOT Revolution and the latest technologies.

ITRI showcased multiple new AI system training and inferential techniques at this year’s ITRI ICT TechDay. Open AI Training System, for instance, is focused on providing an optimized open source software technology for deep learning training. The system can speed up training time while maintaining accuracy. It also features automatic hyperparameter optimization, and high-speed data flow between storage devices and RAM. Alongside various computing processors for deep learning training and the world-leading server industry in Taiwan, ITRI is expected to build up Taiwan’s AI system industry to increase its competitiveness in the global market.
