To propel the development of battery technology, ITRI has joined forces with Saft, a France-based battery company. In late June, the company’s Chief Technology Officer Kamen Nechev visited ITRI and signed a collaboration agreement, witnessed by Hung-Li Chen, President of HCM, the material supplier in this collaboration. Leveraging HCM’s advanced lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) cathode materials, ITRI and Saft are dedicated to developing next-generation LMFP battery technologies. The joint efforts help both parties tap into the electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) markets, highlighting Taiwan’s strength and value in high-end battery material R&D.

LMFP battery is an upgraded version of the traditional lithium-iron phosphate battery. Besides retaining lithium-iron phosphate battery’s key advantages, such as low cost, long cycle life, and high safety, LMFP features 15%-20% higher voltage and energy density, making it a critical technology for future EVs and ESS applications. This Taiwan-France collaboration will foster deeper integration of materials and battery technologies, delivering much more competitive solutions to the global energy market.

“The collaboration with Saft marks a critical milestone for Taiwan’s battery materials to enter the international market,” said Jeffrey Kuo-Chan Chiou, General Director of Material and Chemical Research Laboratories at ITRI. “By combining our strengths, we aim to jointly promote the technical validation and commercialization of LMFP batteries, setting a new model for international cooperation.”

In the meantime, Dr. Nechev expressed strong recognition of Taiwan’s innovation in battery materials, looking forward to strengthening Saft’s global deployment of next-generation battery technologies through this partnership. This collaboration deepens ITRI’s ties with international partners, accelerating the upgrade and market expansion of Taiwan’s battery industry supply chain.
