ITRI showcased its achievements in the integration of optoelectronics, ICT, and machinery and presented smart solutions and applications under the theme “Welcoming the New AI Lifestyle” at COMPUTEX 2018. Exhibits included Intelligent Vision System for Companion Robots, Computer Vision Based Self-Checkout System, micro LED, ITRI MusicAI, Hybrid Power Drone with High Payload and Duration, Long-acting Drone and Aerial Photography Intelligence Analysis Technology, and more.
ITRI President Edwin Liu remarked that Taiwan is taking advantage of the arrival of the AIoT era by focusing on the manufacturing sector’s AI strengths in endpoint data, various databases, and core computing technologies in semiconductors. Taiwan should be able to be a key partner for vertical integration players or ecosystem leaders, utilizing smart systems and services to create new types of technology service models. ITRI, he said, will integrate AI, big data, and hardware & software technology to form an innovation-oriented platform that can be utilized in a flexible manner. Based on this open and innovative service platform, various smart systems are being developed to assist in industrial transformation.
For example, ITRI is looking to seize opportunities associated with the trend of self-service stores with its Computer Vision Based Self-Checkout System. With deep learning and image recognition technology, the system is able to identify the location of a product placed on a checkout countertop, as well as other features such as shape, color, and writing. Therefore, it can recognize the type, quantity and price of the products purchased and displays all the information on the screen, completing self-checkout service within five seconds while replacing the need for barcode scanning at checkout. This system can be attached to a point of sale, offering lower installation costs compared with existing checkout-free systems, thus creating a higher level of acceptance in the marketplace.
Among other innovations ITRI exhibited for COMPUTEX 2018, we would like to further highlight two technologies, illustrating ITRI’s efforts in developing micro LED applications and drone solutions.
