New ITRI Laureates Announced

ITRI held the 2019 ITRI Laureate Ceremony to recognize its newly named laureates in October. ROC President Tsai Ing-wen attended the event to extend her congratulations and to bestow badges and certificates to the five laureates, including AbGenomics Chairman Patrick Y. Yang, Taiwan Cement CEO Nelson Chang, Winbond Electronics Chairman Arthur Yu-Cheng Chiao, Allis Electric Group President Chen-Tung Yang, and Formosa Plastics Chairman Jason Lin. The five laureates were selected for their outstanding leadership as they have led enterprises to become globally competitive, bringing great impact to industry growth.

President Tsai stated that each laureate is an important promoter of industry, and she expressed her appreciation to ITRI for the contributions it has made to the nation and its industry. President Tsai hopes that ITRI will continue to foster industrial clusters that will pave the way for enterprises to inject creative vitality into industry. The newly named laureates will join with their counterparts to leverage their abilities and bring even greater benefits to Taiwan industry, she said.

On the same day, ITRI held its annual laureate meeting, which was attended by 14 newly or previously named laureates. The group engaged in discussions and made suggestions on industrial upgrading and transformation. The laureates affirmed ITRI's three major application directions of Smart Living, Quality Health, and Sustainable Environment, which reflect global trends and will meet social and industrial needs from 2030 onwards. They also called for a focus on the development of common infrastructure technologies, which require long-term government support, including AI, semiconductor chips, and cyber security. The laureates particularly stressed the importance of internationalization, and the utilization of international resources and talent to assist in Taiwan's development. They also pinpointed IP internationalization as an important model for Taiwan's economic development.

Dr. Patrick Y. Yang, AbGenomics Chairman, used to serve as Roche’s Executive Vice President and Global Head of Technical Operations. For a long time, he has worked to help connect Taiwan’s biomedical industry and the international community.

Mr. Nelson Chang, Taiwan Cement CEO, has a broad perspective to shift his company’s focus away from traditional industry towards environmental, energy, and ecological businesses. He helped Taiwan Cement to tap into the renewable energy sector and develop a circular economy to drive Taiwan towards a sustainable future.

Mr. Arthur Yu-Cheng Chiao, Winbond Electronics Chairman, has led his company in independent R&D and innovation for over 30 years; therefore Winbond can stand out from the competitive global memory market and become the world’s largest sequential NOR-FLASH memory supplier.

Mr. Chen-Tung Yang, Allis Electric Group Founder and President, contributed significantly to the stabilization of Taiwan’s electrical power when Taiwan’s economy was taking off.

Mr. Jason Lin, Formosa Plastics Chairman, advocates technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and employee wellbeing in his business management, leading Formosa Plastics towards the development of green energy industry.
