Transparent Display Virtual-Real Fusion Technologies at Touch Taiwan

ITRI showcased some of its latest R&D achievements in smart displays at Touch Taiwan 2022 this April, featuring transparent display virtual-real fusion techniques to enable dynamic imagery and augmented reality applications. Highlights include a high clearness transparent projection screen, an interactive aquarium that can display real-time information on marine life, and an in-vehicle display that can reduce motion sickness.

Details of exhibit highlights are as follows.

High Clearness Transparent Projection Screen

The High Clearness Transparent Projection Screen can be used in various transparent display virtual-real fusion applications.

ITRI has developed the high clearness transparent projection screen based on advanced optical structural design on a transparent substrate. The transmittance achieves ≥ 80%, haze ≤ 10% and Luminous efficacy of ≥ 1.2 nits/W. This technology can effectively scatter projected light on the surface of the screen and keep the background scene clear. Featuring large size, high transparency and low cost, this technology can be used in applications such as smart car windows, exhibit display, edutainment and retail applications.

The interactive aquarium can dynamically present information according to visitor's viewing angle and the position of marine life inside.

This smart interactive aquarium is based on virtual-real fusion technology on transparent display. With anti-masking face recognition, eyeball tracking, hand gesture, skeleton behavior recognition, and object tracking, this aquarium can dynamically present information according to visitors’ viewing angle and position of marine life inside, while the accuracy rate of marine life recognition is over 98%. This system has been introduced to the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, providing visitors an interactive experience to learn about sea creatures on exhibit. This technology also won a Smart Display Application Award in the Smart Edutainment category at Touch Taiwan 2022.

Anti-Motion Sickness Technology for In-Vehicle Display

In response to future trend of smart mobility, ITRI has developed anti-motion sickness technology of a virtual-real fusion system for an in-vehicle transparent display. By integrating a visual reference image on the transparent display, it reduces dizziness caused when passengers read information in a moving vehicle. Trial tests by ITRI have showed that more than 80% of passengers noted an improvement in reduced motion sickness with the technology. This is ideal for use in sightseeing buses or other applications in smart mobility.

To meet the requirements of immersive AR interaction, ITRI has developed virtual-real fusion interactive technology for large scale curved transparent display. It can support interaction in 3 to 6 zones in the arc with a response time of less than 0.4 seconds. It can provide a somatosensory AR interaction experience by detecting the viewer’s position, and can be implemented on edutainment fields such as museums or exhibitions.
