On July 5th, ITRI held celebrations to mark its 45th anniversary, during which it also announced its latest group of laureates, namely Kang Lung Wang, Jimmy Chu, Matthew Miau, and Yue-Teh Jang. President Ing-Wen Tsai personally bestowed the honor on the new laureates and thanked them for their contributions to the nation.
President Tsai remarked that the government and industry have a common goal of helping Taiwan find the next transformative driver of economic momentum. Over the past two years, the government has devoted considerable resources to the development of green energy, helping to accelerate the transformation of the energy industry. This is not unlike 30 years ago when Taiwan reinvented its economy by making major efforts to develop and grow the semiconductor and information communications sectors. Taiwan today cannot fear change, as innovation will always be the key to Taiwan’s success, she stated. President Tsai expressed her hope that ITRI will lead Taiwan in creating another wave in its economic miracle.
ITRI Chairman Chih-Kung Lee commented that ITRI, as a government-sponsored research institute, actively responds to the 5+2 Industrial Innovation Plan and dedicates its R&D to cross-disciplinary technologies such as smart machinery, water treatment, and green energy. ITRI will also continue to expand the applications of its Open Innovation System Platform to assist industries, he added. Meanwhile, ITRI President Edwin Liu indicated that ITRI will focus on market-driven R&D, while playing the role as a bridge between the industrial, academic, and research communities. ITRI will remain committed to being a solid partner of industry, he said.
On the same day, ITRI also held a special tech exhibition to mark its anniversary, showing the positive impact that innovative technology is having on industry. President Tsai and other guests present expressed their appreciation for ITRI’s important contributions to the revitalization of industry and to underpinning the development of industry on a more evenly balanced basis throughout Taiwan.
ITRI laureates have made outstanding contributions in promoting industrial technology development and enhancing social wellbeing. ITRI hopes that these distinguished individuals will provide insightful suggestions on the development of national industrial policies.
This year marks the seventh group of laureates named: Kang Lung Wang, Distinguished Professor and Raytheon Chair in Electrical Engineering at UCLA; Jimmy Chu, founder of Fair Friend Group, Matthew Miau, chairman of the Mitac-Synnex Group; and Yue-Teh Jang, Chairman and CEO of Medeon Biodesign.
